Casual Support Worker

Responsibilities:

The Casual Support Worker provides frontline support to clients accessing social service programs. This role may include assisting with daily living needs, emotional support, outreach, crisis de-escalation, referrals, documentation, transportation support, and program activities.

Casual Support Workers help ensure that services are delivered in a safe, respectful, trauma-informed, and culturally sensitive manner. This position is ideal for someone who is flexible, dependable, calm under pressure, and committed to supporting people facing barriers.

Key Responsibilities

Client Support

  • Provide respectful, client-centred support to individuals accessing programs and services.
  • Assist clients with daily routines, appointments, meals, activities, transportation, or basic needs, depending on the program.
  • Support clients experiencing housing insecurity, poverty, mental health challenges, substance use, family conflict, isolation, or other barriers.
  • Use trauma-informed and strengths-based approaches when working with clients.
  • Help clients connect with community resources, health services, housing supports, employment services, food programs, and other local agencies.
  • Encourage independence, personal safety, dignity, and positive decision-making.

Program Support

  • Assist with day-to-day program operations.
  • Support group activities, drop-in services, outreach shifts, residential programs, or community events as assigned.
  • Maintain a welcoming, clean, and safe program environment.
  • Follow program schedules, service plans, safety procedures, and organizational policies.
  • Provide coverage for staff absences, vacation, increased service demand, or emergency staffing needs.

Safety and Crisis Response

  • Respond calmly and professionally to challenging behaviours or crisis situations.
  • Use de-escalation techniques and follow established safety protocols.
  • Report safety concerns, incidents, suspected abuse, neglect, or urgent client needs to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with clients, families, and community partners.
  • Follow confidentiality and privacy requirements at all times.

Documentation and Communication

  • Complete shift notes, incident reports, client records, and communication logs accurately and on time.
  • Communicate relevant information to supervisors and team members.
  • Participate in shift handovers, team check-ins, and case discussions when required.
  • Follow agency procedures for reporting concerns, service gaps, and client progress.

Requirements:

Qualifications

  • Certificate, diploma, or coursework in social services, human services, community support, mental health, addictions, child and youth care, social work, education assistance, or a related field is an asset.
  • Previous experience in social services, community support, residential care, outreach, shelter services, youth work, seniors support, disability support, or crisis response is preferred.
  • Experience working with vulnerable populations is an asset.
  • Knowledge of Quesnel, the Cariboo region, and local community resources is an asset.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed practice, harm reduction, mental health, addictions, poverty, housing insecurity, and culturally safe care is preferred.

  • Basic computer skills for email, documentation, and reporting.
  • Flexibility to accept shifts on short notice.

Additional Requirements

  • Criminal Record Check, including vulnerable sector screening.
  • Valid Class 5 B.C. driver’s licence and reliable transportation may be required, depending on the program.
  • First Aid, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, Mental Health First Aid, ASIST, Naloxone training, FoodSafe, or similar training is an asset.
  • Ability to work days, evenings, weekends, overnight shifts, and statutory holidays as needed.
  • Ability to perform light physical duties, which may include standing, walking, lifting supplies, assisting with meals, or supporting program setup.

Benefits:

$25.00–$32.00 per hour, depending on qualifications, experience, program assignment, and funding requirements.

Additional compensation may apply for evening, weekend, statutory holiday, overnight, or emergency coverage shifts, where applicable.
